Encrypted Messaging

Messaging apps built around end-to-end encryption by default, so message content is unreadable to the provider and to anyone intercepting it in transit.

Encrypted messaging apps generate keys on each device and encrypt messages before they leave it, so only the intended recipient's device can decrypt them. The distinction that matters is whether encryption is the default for every conversation, or an optional mode users must remember to enable.

Why it matters: plain SMS and many chat apps store or can access message content server-side. Choosing a messenger with default end-to-end encryption and open-source, audited clients closes that gap without changing how you communicate.
