And it only works if you actually act on the scores; worn and ignored, it’s a subscription you’re paying for guilt.

What is Whoop and how does it work?

Whoop is a subscription band — the hardware ships with the membership rather than being bought outright — that tracks your cardiovascular load 24/7 through an optical (PPG) heart-rate sensor. WHOOP’s official bands are green 67–100%, yellow 34–66% and red 0–33% (WHOOP). Green means your body is primed for a strenuous day; yellow means moderate load; red means rest is likely what it needs.
  • Strain Score (0–21) — the real-time cardiovascular load of anything: a workout, a tense meeting, caffeine, a bad night. It’s built on the Borg scale of perceived exertion and is deliberately non-linear — going from 10 to 20 is far harder than going from 0 to 10, and two 10-strain sessions do not add up to 20 (WHOOP). It is not a percentage of your daily capacity.

Prices are as of August 2026 and both companies revise them; verify before you buy.   • Use the bicep strap for high intensity. Sprints, climbing, anything explosive — wrist placement adds motion artifact and distorts the heart-rate signal the strain score is built on. What makes Whoop different from a fitness watch

The Apple Watch, Fitbit, and Garmin all measure heart rate, and several now ship their own readiness metrics. What differs is emphasis: few build their entire core logic around strain-and-recovery balance the way Whoop does. Whoop’s algorithm exists to answer one question — how much load can you handle today? A fitness watch answers a different one — how many calories did you burn?
