Definition
Parasocial Relationship
A one-sided sense of connection a person feels toward a media figure, influencer, or creator who does not know they exist.
A parasocial relationship forms when repeated exposure to a media figure, through videos, streams, or social posts, creates a felt sense of intimacy or friendship that is not reciprocal. Platforms often design engagement mechanics that intensify this feeling because it drives retention.
Why it matters: recognising a parasocial dynamic for what it is helps separate genuine community and support, which is reciprocal, from a one-way attention relationship engineered to keep you watching.
